Running Out of Puffin

A report suggests that the Puffin and the Turtle dove are amongst the species of birds most at risk of 'extinction' on UK shores, given their current rates of decline (http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/oct/29/puffin-turtle-dove-extinction-uk-endangered-species). It is unclear whether their numbers are increasing elsewhere in the world (as might happen if the declines are largely consequences of climate change, which can displace species) or on a downward spiral everywhere (perhaps suggesting that direct anthropogenic-human-mediated- actions account for the declines).

Caterpillars to Post

Some of the varied caterpillars from Sikkim (NE India), showing a range of strategies to minimise predation.

Birder's Bonus 233

Unusually, a Mute swan ( Cynus olor ) was floating on the Loughor estuary near Bynea.
